Freedom Fighter Dr. Ashton Bunda is Dead
Dr. Ashton
Mwansa Bunda One of founding members of Zambia’s first ruling political party ,the United National
Independence Party (UNIP) , passed on
Thursday 18th April2024 aged 92 around 23hours at his
residence in new Kabwata, Lusaka, following
a long illness .
Dr. Bunda
played a back ground role in transition of the Movement of Multi –Party Democracy
(MMD) in 1990 and later formed third
political party in Zambia called the National Democratic Alliance (NADA) with
his colleagues Dr. Dickson Konkola the late, Reverend Isaac Mumpanshya and Mr.
Peter Chicko Bwalya .
Dr. Bunda a
political scientist was the first African black teach who taught at Prince
Charles secondary school now called “The Kamwala secondary school” in 1959 ,
and in 1969 he was requested to help Mozambique military president Samora
Marshell to draft the current
constitution and played an integral role in
helping military leader Jonas Savimbi writing the the current constitution of
Angola .
Dr. Bunda
was appointed by Zambia’s first president Dr. Kenneth Kaunda to be his personal
physician for one month in 1970.
Dr. Bunda
who was life member of Amnesty International ,did not serve as member of
parliament as expected , let alone that of cabinet during his political activity and helped secure the plot where Libala Seventh
Day Adventist church stands on Chilimbulu road.
