Influx of Cheap Products Cause Company Shutdowns, Soobramanien

Common Market of for Southern Africa (COMESA) Business Council Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Mr.Teddy Yagambaram Soobramanien networks of counterfeit trade undermines creativity, innovation and competitiveness as well as slowing down investment in the research and development of new products and ideas.

Speaking during the launch of the COMESA Business Council (CBC) on regional study report on illicit trade on 17th November 2023 at Taj Pamodzi Hotel in Lusaka, Soobramanien said the adverse effects on industry competitiveness often led to company shutdowns due to the influx of cheap substandard products, hence reducing government revenue, sales and profits of companies, investments, employment, public health safety and security including the economy at large.

The COMESA Business Council Chief Executive Officer said illicit trade undermines the ability of government to collect important source of revenue that help ensure the key public services in the health, safety and security of its citizenry, adding that by stopping illicit trade ,Africa could potentially create more jobs.

“In 2015, the COMESA Business Council commissioned its first study on illicit trade the study that was entitled Promoting manufacturing competitiveness in COMESA, and was a comprehensive review of the situation across COMESA which provided the baseline and measures to be implemented in the COMESA region,” Soobramanien recalled.    

Soobramanien said the 2015 frame work provides measure on how to prevent and counteract illicit trade in COMESA region through regional and national coronation and cooperation, the study was undertaken in Ethiopia, Kenya ,Mauritius  Uganda and Zambia.
