YOUTH, Sport, and Arts Minister
Elvis Chishala Nkandu launched the National Youth Scheme (NYS) in Mongu
District of the Western Province on Saturday, 19th February targeted
at empowering 2, 500 young people.
A day later on Sunday, 2oth
February, 2022, Nkandu's team moved to Solwezi District in North Western
Province launch the Provincial Youth Scheme.
Unveiling the enterprise, an
optimistic Nkandu explained that the National Youth Scheme (NYS) is the United
Party for National Development Alliance Dawn Administration’s initiative aimed at providing grants to the
most vulnerable youths to enable them to build their capital base for bigger
micro-credit facilities and income-generating projects (IGP’s) to ensure
economic empowerment at individual and household levels.
Currently serving as UPND Alliance Kaputa Member of Parliament (MP) in the Northern Province, Nkandu told expectant youths in the Western Province that the NYS programme will assist young people gain experience after a temporary shock or street and need assistance.
“More than 2,500 youths are expected to benefit from the National Youth Scheme in Western Province this year. In our address, we stated that the new dawn administration under the leadership of His Excellency President Hakainde Hichilema is aware that youths mostly those in rural areas have for a long time been neglected which has made most of them vulnerable and trapped in the poverty cycle. It is for that reason that the Government through our ministry has embarked on developing programmes that will address the diverse needs of the youth regardless of where they are and their vulnerability status,” wrote on his Facebook page monitored by The Bundas Incorporated Sports team.
Nkandu says Government led by President Hakainde Hichilema and Vice President Witner Kapembwa Mutale-Nalumango is positive that youths will be empowered and possess an opportunity to effectively contribute to national development.
Meanwhile, Nkandu appealed
to provincial administrations countrywide to quicken the disbursement of funds
following the official launch of the National Youth Scheme (NYS).
“The slow disbursement of funds is a serious setback to the government’s efforts to empower young people so that they can contribute to the country’s economic development agenda. Youths the rural areas can help the decentralization idea if empowered by creating jobs as opposed to rushing to Lusaka to look for employment resulting congesting the capital city,” noted Nkandu.
