The successful 2023 Zambia Tennis open sponsored by MIKA hotels  that saw Zimbabwean tennis ace Shane Tapera beat Karim Hindo of Sierra Leon 6-1,6-1 exhibited  high class African tennis, hence deserves international standards infrastructure like the advocated ‘Zambia Victoria Falls Tennis Open’ Ultra-Modern facility as part of President Hakainde Hichilema’s United Party for National Development (UPND) New Dawn Administration achievements.

The annual tournament which was overseen by Zambia Tennis Association (ZTA) president Lighton Musonda ran from Friday 21st October to 24th October, 2023 on Independence  Day,   attracted 120 players  from different countries  namely:  Democratic Republic of Congo(DRC), Malawi ,Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Angola and Sierra Leon  with tennis enthusiasts and parents filling up the small Lusaka Tennis Club built smaller in pre- independence period in the 1950s.

A chat with seven (7) Zambian parents  on the material day, resulted in the first respondent  stating that Zambia as a centrally located and land- Linked must take advantage and build the ‘The Zambia Victoria Falls Tennis  Open as soon as is possible to create recereational jobs and earn foreign exchange, a missed opportunity in the past 60 years.

“The government should grab this opportunity with both hands, the beautiful Heroes stadium in Lusaka and the Levy Mwanawasa stadium in Ndola were built by the Patriotic Front (PF) administration. We have the Victoria falls, one the seven (7) wonders of the world, and many people around the world wish to see it. We are very fortunate here you see, other nations don’t have, if the international tennis court is built there, we will have the whole world here, including international media,” a female parent who declined to be named explained.

At 59 years Zambia has come of age to host international tennis tournaments that would market Zambia’s Livingstone tourist city  as well as bringing in foreign currency and  provide permanents jobs for the local people.

Currently, the tennis association is privileged to have patriotic   and passionate sponsors  in the name of MIKA HOTELS  now sponsoring the seventh (7th) edition of tournament and put up a stake K500,000 towards the2023 tennis  tournament.

With players best players having travelled from as far as West Africa west Africa ,Southern Africa and the Central part of Africa  the Zambia Tennis Association(ZTA) led by president Lighton Musonda should now spread its tentacles start inviting European  players and American elite tennis players in the near future following the visitation by European tennis prodigy Roger Federer in 2018.
